-Kristian Jeffrey to lead Guyana’s quest for supremacy
Host Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) has intensified preparations ahead of the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) which will be staged on November 15, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The final leg of the Series which is the fourth following those staged in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados will see the best racrs in the Caribbean square off in a battle for overall and individual supremacy.
Guyana, who is positioned third in the points standing on 511 points, currently trails leaders Trinidad and Tobago (658) by 147 and Barbados (533) by a mere 21, while Jamaica on 369 and Cayman Islands 138 are stationed behind in that order respectively.
However, the Guyanese competitors will no doubt be looking to seize home court advantage and maintain the status quo as obtained in the other territories that the championship was hosted in.
As customary, a large influx of overseas visitors and competitors are expected to descend on these shores to witness what has undoubtedly become one of the biggest legs in terms of crowd support among the four host nations.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently, Vice-President of the GMR&SC Shairaz Roshandin Mohamed said that a large contingent from Trinidad and Tobago is expected, while Barbados, Jamaica and Suriname have also indicated their willingness to send their best competitors.
Once again, reigning Caribbean and local champion Kristian Jeffrey is anticipated to lead Guyana’s charge to retain the title and support should come from his father Kevin, the maestro Andrew King, Shairaz Roshandin, Chet Singh, Danny Persaud, Afraz Allie, Rameez Mohamed and Ryan Rahaman among others.
Jeffrey, who is just in his second year on the regional circuit has already built a solid reputation for himself and has shown no fear for his more illustrious counterparts, while displaying the skills and dexterity of a veteran in the sport.
His dominance has really bolstered Guyana’s chances of coming out on top again and it will take some extreme driving from the opposition to stop him from copping the individual title for the second straight time.
In the Suprebike category, Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira, who leads the standings with 133 points, is followed closely by his cousin Elliott Vieira on 119 and they along with the experienced Joel Neblette (36) and the talented Matthew Vieira (25) should be enough to thrill the fans with their anticipated rivalry.
Jamaica’s Robert McDonald, who is stationed third on 45 points, could make things even more interesting in the division, but the Guyanese seems to have far more firepower and with home turf playing a crucial role on all the circuits, a clean sweep is what the fans will surely enjoy.
A huge turnout is anticipated and local supporters are being urged to make it a date to be there to rally around the local competitors.
