The Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) three-day senior Inter-County trial match
to pick the Demerara team for the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Inter-County cricket tournament, tentatively set to commence on May 16, got off to a false start at the Wales Community Centre ground in West Bank Demerara due the absence of 10 players and a water logged Western boundary.
Although the sun was out in all of its glory all day and the pitch and most of the ground was dry, water had accumulated near the boundary from the ‘Back dam’ due to the none-operational Pump Station behind the South Eastern fence of the venue which was only turned on just before Lunch.
Another key reason for the late start was the unavailability of the absent players who were either overseas, did not get time off from their jobs or in case of Police trio Seon Daniels, Randy
Knights and Andrew Lyght, who were all ‘in line’ due to the May 11 National Elections.
Six of the players invited are playing overseas, most of them in Trinidad and when the game finally commenced it was changed to a ‘match simulation’ game. On a slow turner, Vishal Singh’s team batted first and by the time the days’ play was called off, were 203-6 with National off-spinning all-rounder Steven Jacobs unbeaten on 26 with four fours and a six.
Openers Rajindra Chandrika (18) and left-hander Trevon Griffith (18) looked untroubled on a fast outfield and played several well timed shots with Griffith favoring the punch off the back through cover and the right-handed Chandrika pulling left-arm pacer disdainfully behind square leg for four.
Leon Johnson got his ‘pegs’ stuck into the pitch which had preparation moisture, missed a sweep and was bowled behind his back while Chris Barnwell, who played some brutal shots, especially off the spinners and Singh, who fell for one, were all removed as five bowlers shared the wickets to fall to bowlers while Robin Bacchus was run out by the length of the pitch in a mix-up with Taignarine Chanderpaul. Today the action is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs. (Sean Devers)
