Guyana’s athletes have commenced their quest for top honours at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games being held under the slogan, “Share the Games, Share our Dreams”.
Table Tennis player Chelsea Edghill lost her first two games by similar 3-0 margins when competition got underway on August 17 following the grand opening ceremony one day earlier.
Competing in the Women’s singles first stage, Edghill lost to Natalia Bajor of Poland 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 and then went down to Karol Mischek of Austria 11-7, 11-7, 11-6. She was scheduled to play her third of four first-round games on August 18 against Lea Rakovac of Croatia.
Also scheduled to compete on August 18 (Nanjing being 12 hours ahead of Guyana) is swimmer Britany van Lang in the 100m freestyle heat one against Claire Bergasse of St. Lucia, Magarita Pissaridou of Cyprus and Sabrina Asif Kassam of the Republic of Tanzania.
van Lange (1:02.40) has the second fastest entry time behind Pissaridou (59.70), Bergasse (1:04.32) and Kassam (1:14.43).
The other athletes in Nanjing under Manager Dr. Karen Pilgrim, are swimmer Hannibal Gaskin who will compete on August 20 in the 50m fly; runner Jason Yaw will also be in action on August 20 in the 400m.
One day later, van Lange will be in action again in the 50m free while Gaskin will contest the 100m free. Yaw will be back in the limelight on August 23.
The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games encompasses all 28 sports on the Olympic programme and will end on August 28.
