Over the weekend Jeanette Singh, President of the Three Rivers Foundation, issued a letter to the media stating that 18 month-old Kenneth Prince, called ‘Baby Kenneth’ does not require any further surgery.
Earlier last week, in a follow up article on the child’s condition, it was stated that the child is gearing for a second surgery some time later this year.
“Your article on Kenneth Prince is inaccurate and incorrect…Kenneth does not require any further surgery…Articles requesting further donations are misleading to the public,” Three Rivers Foundation stated.
But the child’s grandmother, Bernadette Jackson, had said that a local doctor has confirmed that the child who successfully completed open heart surgery a few months ago does require another surgery.
When contacted, the Doctor who asked not to be named, said that from the offset it was always understood that the surgery would have been a two-phase one.
The doctor explained that the second surgery will be done once the child would have been examined by a doctor at the Caribbean Heart Institute and once he would have reached a certain age.
“If they put in a child size valve then they will have to change it every two years but an adult size valve will not have to be changed.”
The doctor further explained that the first surgery was done in order to give the child a chance at living while the second surgery will be to solve the problem.
After his diagnosis in May last year the child’s relatives had been pleading for the public’s assistance.
However on November 7, last, the toddler who was the victim of a chronic heart problem underwent a successful open heart surgery and now leads an almost normal live as any child his age does.
The Ministry of Health contributed the sum of US$5,000; and Ahilia/Bishwa Panday donated $200,000 specifically for the ticket from Guyana to Canada.
Hamley Case also played an integral part in the proceedings by donating US$2,100 which covered the cost of the plane ticket from Canada to India. In addition, he donated a further US$500 to assist with food and necessary clothing for the weather.
Kenneth was diagnosed with a congenital Cyanotic heart disease at four months of age. He exhibited signs of failure to thrive and a cardiac murmur was discovered along with central and peripheral cyanosis.
