The rampaging quartet of Republican boxers, junior/flyweight Danishwar Narine, lightweight, Nankumar Singh, junior/welterweight, Denroy Nero and heavyweight Trelon Monroe, registered impressive victories to lead their gym to championship honours when the curtains were drawn on the Andrew Murray Novices Boxing Championships at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Sunday evening last.
The four helped their gym amass 8 points, a similar amount as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), denying the Camp Street crew from enjoying lone ownership of the prestigious award.
Indeed, the Republican boxers regurgitated nostalgic memories of their gym during its heydays when they registered four impressive knockouts against Richard Subratter (FYF), Quincy Jones (GDF), Brian Manning (FYF) and Samuel Primo (GDF), respectively. Despite having to share championship honours with the Army, the Republicans gained a vital edge in the bragging department when Singh returned to lift the best boxer award after much deliberation from the selection committee.
All four Republicans won their bouts by the knockout route. Narine registered his victory in 2:55secs of the third round while Singh needed just 2:37secs of the second stanza to earn his. Nero’s fight lasted 1:58secs into the second round while Monroe did the job in 2:53secs of the first stanza.
The soldiers had six finalists while the Republicans fielded four. Added to that, several of the bouts were all GDF affairs, securing vital points for them. Notwithstanding this, the Republican crew left the venue a contented bunch promising to repeat the feat at the impending Intermediate championships.
Boxers from the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) also continued their good showing but this time around had to be content with third place. Five boxers from this gym made it to the finals but only two emerged champions. They are Michael Jordon, who stopped his gym mate Robert Sandy in 1:11secs of round three to claim the featherweight title and heavyweight Roberto Lancaster who gained a walkover against Rodwell Sandy (GDF).
In between those bouts, Keeve Allicock defeated Benjamin Henry on points and won the bantamweight title. Also, in an all GDF affair, Patrick Gordon failed to overcome his colleague, Rock Watson and lost the welterweight encounter. Eon Bancroft, who represented Special Forces of the GDF, prevailed over his colleague from Engineer, Blair Haynes.
Meanwhile, moments after the last bout had concluded, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony congratulated the executive of GABA for exhibiting superb organizational skills.
He further congratulated the boxers for their qualitative performances even as he urged them to continue ascribing for excellence. Minister Anthony further urged the executive of GABA to organize frequent competitions for the young pugilists. “Such ploys would encourage more participation while opening the door for the boxers to hone their skills,” the Minister said.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar was also at the function. He congratulated the hard working executives of GABA while complimenting the high standard of fights. “GABA is indeed a good team working together for the boxers’ good, keep it up!” Mr. Kumar exhorted.
Meanwhile, the boxers will take a short break before returning to their respective gyms in preparation of the Intermediate Boxing Championships, scheduled for the same venue from June 4-6 next.
