To attend technical course in Mexico
By Edison Jefford
National Basketball Coach Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan has procured an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship via the International Olympic Committee and Guyana Olympic Association and will attend a technical course in Mexico.
Cadogan is scheduled to attend the training programme during August 22-29 and will be brought up to date with the latest forms of high performance preparation for both national and international players and teams.
“The certification is recognised world wide. I am definitely honoured to have this chance of being a good ambassador. I think its time that I update my technical knowledge so that I can make more contributions locally,” he said. Cadogan is one of three Guyanese International Basketball Federation licensed coaches. The others are Abdullah ‘Zico’ Hamid and US-based Bernard Daniels. He is currently the Secretary of the Georgetown sub-association.
“As a coach, it (the course) will teach me how to deal with various athletes; those coming from college; those playing internationally as well as local athletes. It covers physical and psychological preparation,” the National Coach said.
He said that one does not have to necessarily be an internationally licensed coach to gain the scholarship, but the licence as a base certainly will help. According to Cadogan, there is need for more of such development in Guyana.
Cadogan also has a Diploma in coaching from the Senwell Neis Institute of Coaching and Sport Education in Hungary. He is Head Coach of the Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club and Technical Director of the national federation.
