Members of the National Junior Squash team that successfully retained the Boys, Girls and Team titles at the recently concluded Caribbean Championships, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, at his Head Office yesterday.
The team along with officials of the Guyana Squash Association headed by its President Ronald Burch-Smith, Vice President Lloyd Fung-A-Fat and Garfield Wiltshire were among those who visited the Minister. They accompanied Under-17 and 15 champions Keisha Jeffrey and Mary Fung-A-Fat, Kayla Jeffrey, Akeila and Larissa Wiltshire, Nyron Joseph, Gabriella Fernandes and Deje Dias.
Minister Anthony in his conversation with the players extended congratulations and urged them to continue to work hard to maintain their unblemished record, reminding them that once you start winning there will always be competitors trying to defeat you.
“You always have to think about staying ahead of your competitors,” he advised.
Meanwhile, Burch Smith briefed the Minister on upcoming events which the GSA intends to send representative teams, including the Caribbean Seniors in the Cayman Islands from August 17-22.
The GSA President also informed the Minister that WISPA had asked them a few months ago to indicate their intention of hosting a tournament so that a date could be fixed.
Burch Smith told the Minister that in order for them to successfully host a competition of that magnitude a number of prerequisites will have to be met and for this to be done the GSA will need the support of the Ministry.
In response, Dr. Anthony told them that they intend to construct a new Squash Court which should be completed by next year and in keeping with plans already outlined, they will be meeting with various associations for discussions to support their bids. “We must know what will be our responsibilities,” he stated.
