Fruta Conquerors continued their fine run at the junior level when their under-11 team defeated Santos by the lone goal of their encounter to win the inaugural Williams Cup under-11 knockout tournament yesterday afternoon at the Tucville ground.
WE ARE THE CHAMPS!!! Williams Cup under-11 champions Fruta Conquerors pose for the camera after yesterday’s triumph against Santos.
By winning the competition, the first of its kind at this level, Conquerors underlined their domination of their counterparts at the Pee Wee level having already won the Courts League.
Starring yet again for the Tucville based team was their captain Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett, who not only fired in the lone goal with one minute to game time culminating a successful solo run from just over the half way line, he was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also shared the highest goal scorer accolade with Santos’ Travis Fitzpatrick, the two ending with 4 goals each.
The match which was an exciting affair was the perfect climax to a well run competition by the Georgetown Football League and sponsor, Dr. Rawle Williams of England and Friends, would be very happy with the way the players conducted themselves.
Santos matched their opponents in every department but it was the little master Ryan Hackett, familiarly called ‘Bum Bum’, who made the difference.
He picked up a ball just over the half way line and finished clinically past the advancing goalkeeper to his left, the entire Santos team caught playing high.
Spectators from both teams expressed their delight and satisfaction with the way the competition was administered and the quality of play exhibited by all the teams who participated.
Marian Academy, who was scheduled to clash with Beacon in the third place match, sealed the deal after Beacon failed to show up with a full team.
A few short months ago coach Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite left the club to return to Uprising and the majority of junior players left with him.
Sponsor Dr. Williams has already indicated that the GFA will select the best players from the competing teams to be part of an ongoing weekend training programme. Honorary Secretary of the GFA Marlan Cole indicated in brief remarks at the presentation that the squad will be named shortly.
Sunburst Camptown, Thomas United, Western Tigers and Strike Again were the other teams who participated in this historic tournament.
GFA President Troy Mendonca was on hand to assist with the presentation.
