Georgetown lift title over Bartica
Team Georgetown led by Most Valuable Player Dominique Saul defeated Bartica 2-0 in the final
of the Golden Jubilee President’s Cup Soccer tournament held at South Shore High School in Flatlands Avenue, Brooklyn, New York on Saturday last and sponsored by Western Union Money Transfer.
Saul netted both goals which propelled the City side to championship victory in this specially arranged one-day tournament that celebrated Guyana’s Gold Jubilee. In advancing to the final, Georgetown won Group A following a tie-breaker match-up with West Demerara which the former won 2-0.
In the group phase, the champions had defeated East Coast 1-0, drew with West Demerara while West Demerara had gotten past East Coast also by a 1-0 margin. Bartica’s passage to the final was as a result of their winning Group B following a 1-0 triumph against Linden and a 1-1 draw with Berbice. Linden and Berbice also drew 1-1.
Trophies were presented to Georgetown, Bartica, Saul and the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper, Troy Carrington of champion’s, Georgetown.
Preliminary round matches were played for 30 minutes while the final was a 90-minute affair.
