The crowd in attendance at the Ato Bolton Stadium in Couva Trinidad, gave the Lady Jags a standing ovation despite them losing 1 – 0 to Puerto Rico on Wednesday night in their semi-final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Olympic Qualifier.
Guyana played what Coach Rodrigues said was their best football all year despite losing.
Guyana started with goalie Chante Sandford, Alison Heydorn, Briana DeSouza, Kayla DeSouza, Justine Rodrigues, Ashley Rodrigues, Aslee Savona, Brittany Persuad, Olivia Gonsalves, Mariam El Masri and Julia Gonsalves.
Ashley Savona created several early chances, playing down the left wing, but Puerto Rico’s defence held its own.
Sandiford, the former UCLA standout keeper had to make several saves for Guyana.
Justine Rodrigues’ free kick was well saved by Puerto Rico’s Karly Gustafson as the teams played a scoreless half.
Alison Heydorn had a second half goal disallowed after the referee called her for a hand ball, while Mariam El Masri took the game to Puerto Rico. She had two efforts saved, while Ashlee Savona was also denied. Second half substitute Otesha Charles also failed to hit the mark.
Puerto Rico’s Karina Socarras rose above the Guyanese defence to head home her country’s winning goal with only a minute left in extra time.
Guyana are to face Jamaica today with a chance of advancing in the tournament still alive.
