Smithfield Rockers of New Amsterdam showed that they are the best basketball team in Berbice after they steadied themselves to defeat Canje Knights 70-61 in the final of the second annual NPG Packaging Basketball tourney for teams in Berbice.
In the finals played last Sunday at the Smithfield Drop-in Centre Basketball court in New Amsterdam, Berbice; the Rockers playing in familiar circumstances on their home court got into their strides early with a steady first session, to lead 20 -15 at the end of the first quarter.
The young Knights lineup continued to fight, but the more seasoned Rockers combination dominated to end the second stanza 29-37.
The third quarter saw both teams coming out rejuvenated as they pressed for the advantage. But try as they might the Knights could not conquer the steady Rockers as the third quarter ended 46-53.
As the final sessions began both teams sensed they were in with a chance to cop the title. However it was more of the same as the Rockers were able to use their experience and keep the Knights at bay for the comfortable 70-61 win to take home the NPG trophy.
The consistent Michael Bowen with 21 points led the way for the Smythfield Rockers and he received good support from Jason Fraser with 16 points, while Jamal Felix who was later adjudged the most valuable player (MVP), supported with 12 points.
For the Canje Knights, Steve Roopnarine poured in 26 points which included five 3-pointers with Jason Gladstone 17 and Devon Hunte 10 showing some fight in the losing cause.
President of the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) Keith Myers, who assisted with the presentation ceremony, congratulated the teams for reaching the final and putting on a good show. He however urged the teams to keep training and maintain good discipline. He stated that he would like to see a higher standard of basketball being played among the teams in Berbice.
Coordinator Vibert Garrett also congratulated and thanked the teams for participating in the competition. He was very grateful to the sponsors NPG Packaging for coming on board to sponsor the tournament and is looking for their continued support for a similar tournament next year.
He also used the opportunity to call on other businesses to come on board to provide sponsorship for the tournament.
Seven teams participated in the competition with the teams being placed into two groups. The teams were in Group A: Rose Hall Jammers of Corentyne, Hope Town Stealers of West Berbice and Canje Knights of East Canje. Group B: was made up of New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers of New Amsterdam, Fyrish Black Sharks of Corentyne and Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice. (Samuel Whyte)
