The 2015 cycling season got off to a flying start yesterday at the inner circuit of the National Park with Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams pedaling to victory in
the feature school boys and invitational 35-lap contest.
Donning the colours of the latest team on the cycling circuit, Team Evolution, Williams made a successful 2015 start. He made it two wins in as many starts for the event, having also won last year’s edition.
Like he has always done, Williams proved that he is still one of the better sprinters around the sport by pulling away from his opponents on the last lap of the contest to clock One Hour 20 Minutes 11 Seconds.
Alonzo Greaves, another of the top riders in the Land of Many Waters, had to settle for the second place and he was followed by the fast rising Hamzah Eastman, and Mark Harris, Alanzo Ambrose and Christopher Griffith to close out the top six places.
Greaves and Ambrose each won two sprint prizes with one apiece to Jamal John, Junior Niles, Harris and Michael Anthony.
In the other races, the 12-14 Boys and Girls saw Rakem Blair taking the win from Daniel Perreira. Junior Niles was victorious in the Veterans Under-50 event, winning from Shameer Baksh and Jaikarran Sookhai.
Linden Blackman won the Veterans Over-50 race while the Over-60 went to Wilfred Thom.
The top juvenile on the day was Berbician Romello Crawford, Jamal John took the runner-up spot with Christopher Griffith, third. The top mountain biker was Seon Budhan. The BMX 6-9 race went to Christopher Goring with Esau Jaisingh and Jessica Mohabir, second and third respectively.
Picking up where he left off in the 2014 season was Sherwin Sampson who took the BMX Boys 9-12 and 12-14 events. Jonathon Jagdeo and Karim Anthony placed second and third in the 9-12, while Thuran Garbarran and Adeala Hodge occupied similar positions in the 12-14 class.
Toping the field in the BMX Open race was Ricardo Sharma from Damion Sukhdeo. Organiser was National Coach, Hassan Mohamed.
Mohamed informed that two road races and two National Park meets will be contested during the month of February with two more National Park meets and three road races planned for the month of March in memory of the late President and founder of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic, Dr Cheddi B. Jagan set for March.
