Tagenarine Chanderpaul is Youth Cricketer of the year
By Sean Devers
West Indies ‘A’ team left- handed batsman Leon Johnson and West Indies Women’s team batter June Ogle copped the Male and Female Cricketer of the year awards respectfully when the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) held its 2013 Awards Ceremony at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion on Tuesday evening.
West Indies under-19 batsman and son of Test icon Shiv Chanderpaul, Tagenarine Chanderpaul collected four Awards, while West Indies left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and Christopher Barnwell received two Awards each.
Marketing Manager of the GCB Raj Singh performed the duties of Master of Ceremonies, while GCB’s Vice – President Fizul Bacchus gave a comprehensive review on Guyana’s cricket during 2013.
Bacchus, speaking on behalf of GCB President Dru Bahadur, who was unavoidably absent, told the gathering which included immediate past Presidents Ramsay Ali and Chetram Singh, that focus for next year would be on Secondary Schools cricket.
The Essequibian added that a Guyana t20 league will be contested and informed that the GCB is now working closely with Government to upgrade cricket facilities across the country.
Director of Sports Neil Kumar said he hopes the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Directors, including Trinidadian Baldath Mahabir who delivered the feature address, should make a genuine effort to resolve the present issues with GCB.
Kumar spoke of the need to place more emphasis on school’s cricket and alluded to the fact that 147 schools participated in the National Sports Commission (NSC) and GCB-run schools competition.
Kumar, who is a member of parliament for the Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/Civic) party opined that the GCC/GFC venture by Dr Bobby Ramroop was a good catalyst for the development of both cricket and football in the city and also feels the clubs would benefit from the proposed project.
Mahabir believes the proper structure is in place to move West Indies cricket forward and says bright days are ahead for the regional game.
Mahabir scolded the Guyana Government for not doing enough with the abundance of natural resources available to them and at one point it seemed as if Mahabir was on a political platform instead of at a cricket Awards Ceremony.
In his lengthy speech the WICB Director said that cricket has become a commercial product and all parties should treat it as such.
