– who will break the historic ISAAC deadlock?
By Edison Jefford
The weather was the Chief Track Judge yesterday in the midst of clear battle lines being drawn ahead of today’s scheduled start of the Inter-Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC), which is more popularly known as the Joint-Services meet.
While Guyana Fire Service and Guyana Prison Service also compete in this meet, it has been a two-way battle time immemorial between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Guyana Police
Force (GPF), which historically tied last year at Camp Ayangana.
The obvious question is who will break the ISAAC deadlock as the armed forces march into the field of battle from today at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. Robert Chisholm, who is GDF Coach, believes that he has put together a competitive team.
According to Chisholm, GDF won the title last year. “Everyone knows that we won last year and something happened. Police is not strong in track; they are very strong in the field events; they only have three athletes,” Chisholm quipped, adding that he has put together a good team, which will give a good account in a tactical battle for them.
“We are looking real good; our team is alright now and we are ready. We’re going to compete in this meet. I think I put together a really good team here,” Chisholm said, adding that everyone on the GDF team is capable of holding their own against the Police.
Quinse Clarke will compete in the 100m and 200m races for the Police while Letitia Myles runs the same distances in the women’s category. In addition, quarter-miler, Patrick King and distance athletes, Cleveland Forde and Tyshon Bentick form a decent line-up.
When contacted yesterday, Police Sports Officer, Colin Boyce informed that the Police is in high spirits ahead of the meet. “We are looking excellent. We won the road relay for the first time and I think with our batch of athletes, we will get the result we want,” Boyce said.
He believes that the Defence Force may have the edge with some of the novelty events. “It is just the novelty events that we have to worry about,” Boyce continued. The Police have athletes such as phenomenal sprinter, Alita Moore; quarter-miler, Winston George and a field events king, Julio Sinclair and queen, Natasha Alder to trump up against the soldiers.
Meanwhile, the weather was an immense concern yesterday as the rain inundated northern parts of the Police Sports Club Ground. Kaieteur Sport understands that there was a meeting yesterday where the way forward as it relates to the track was decided.
“I would love to see the weather hold and the sports run off as usual rather than a postponement or cancellation,” Boyce said, when asked about concerns over inclement weather. ISAAC starts today and will continue tomorrow before the grand finale on Friday.
