Aiming to surpass 2011’s target of 30 programmes
National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed can be easily described as the backbone of cycling in
Guyana and he has continued to prove that by year after year organising dozens of race meets and road races.
Mohamed, who has been running what can be described as the Main Event of cycling in Guyana {Teach Them Young Summer Programme} for the past 35-years is humbly of the view that the year 2012 will be no different in terms of usual success but he anticipates that it will surpass previous years.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Mohamed informed that he is seeking to get this year’s programmes on the road with the annual Ricks & Sari Agro Industries 11-race event at the National Park later this month without giving a specific date.
Mohamed noted that the sport has its quota of challenges but he is committed towards its continued progress and the development of the athletes.
“I will continue to do what it takes to see our riders get the necessary exposure on a regular basis. I’ve been doing so for many years and don’t imagine I can do otherwise. I would like to really salute and pass on good wishes to all my sponsors for their tremendous partnership over the years; without their help we could not have achieved what we have.”
The plain spoken Mohamed was quick to point out that there needs to be more collaboration among the Clubs working towards the expansion of the sport in Guyana. He noted that there is a lot to be done and if Clubs are proactive as a collective, riders will benefit even more.
“I would really like to see our Clubs working together. Apart from the Berbice based Flying Ace Cycle Club, the others are not that active as they can be so I am encouraging them to be more pro-active in 2012.”
The Linden based Bauxhill Flyers Cycle Club came in for high praise from Mohamed who said that they have shown great commitment by ensuring their riders compete at events held in the National Park and the road races over the year. They have been reaping very good rewards he concluded. He is also of the view that Coaches needs to also be pro-active and visible in the interest of development.
Reflecting briefly on the year 2011, Mohamed stated that it was a very good one for the sport from his standpoint. “Last year saw a very hectic programme in place and I am very pleased with the volume of events that we have had. Of course there is room for improvement in a number of areas and that will happen this year. Sponsorship is always a major part of any success story and I am hoping that we can maintain and even improve the level of partnerships that I’ve been able to create.”
Among some of the highlights of 2011 were the 5th Annual Ride For Life; 29th National Sports Commission sponsored 3-Stage Race; The Big Ride and the Re-Surfacing of the Inner Circuit of the National Park, Guyana’s Premier cycling venue.
This project was undertaken and completed by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport.
Another defining moment for Mohamed in 2011 was the success of the Inter-Guiana Games Cycling team under his astute management.
Guyana won both the male and female overall titles with the male team sweeping the road race {1st – 4th} along with the Team Time Trials. The female team placed copped the 2nd and 3rd places in the Time Trials and also won the Road Race.
The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) is responsible for sanctioning all the events that are organised by Mohamed and he is looking forward for their usual unflinching support this year.
Meanwhile, The GCF, headed by President Cheryl Thompson, in an effort to step up activities for this year will be meeting tomorrow to finialise their Programme of activities which would include workshops and developmental programmes.
