Hampton Games two-time gold medalist, Malcolm Walcott along with national sprinters, Letitia Myles and Tiffany Carto were chosen by Athletics Association Guyana (AAG) to represent Guyana at Commonwealth Youth Games.
The Games will be held in Isle of Man, England from September 7-11 and the three athletes are expected to leave Guyana on September 6 to return on September 13. They all competed last Sunday at the Inter-Guiana Games trials.
Walcott is registered to participate in the 800m and 1500m, while Carto and Myles in the 100m and 200m. Myles proved her form on Sunday when she won the sprint double ahead of her team-mate, Carto, who will look to improve this week.
In an interview with the athletes and Coach, Lyndon Wilson, Kaieteur Sport was informed that the athletes are hoping to reach the finals in their events. Myles was confident, stating that she aspires to run a new personal record in the 100m and 200m at the Games.
“I am looking forward to doing my best, my personal best that is, I am hoping to register a new personal time in the 100m and 200m since I have achieved new records at IGG trials on Sunday. I ran 12.2s in the 100m and 25.5 in the 200m,” Myles said.
She said that her training programme is based on starts. “I am doing a lot of starts in training and I am also working on my home run (backstretch) since that is also a weak area,” she said.
According to Carto, her weakest area in training currently is getting out of the blocks in a faster reaction time. She said that she will be working on that this week.
“My first strategy for this competition will be to qualify for the finals and second will be to medal. My training programme consists of a lot of technically work since my weakest area in training is my starts.”
Walcott’s expectations are to secure a spot on the podium. “First, I want to qualify for the finals in the hope I will get a medal. My present personal best is 2:00s in the 800m and 4:20 in the 1500m. I want to improve those,” he said.
Wilson expects the athletes to do well. “I asked these athletes to do their best. Once they maintain their focus, it can be done. I think Guyana should be proud as these athletes are representing an entire Nation,” he noted.
The three athletes are currently under the watchful eyes of Wilson at the Police Sports Club Ground Eve Leary ahead of their departure. (Juanita Hooper)
