Carlton Simon was crowned the new champion when the annual National Draughts Championship was held last Saturday at the National Stadium.
The tournament was played in three categories; A, B & C. Dexter Johnson from Linden emerged as the leading ‘C’ class player with 37 points while Wayne Ford (31) and Edwin Mangal (26) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
In the ‘B’ division, Khemraj Pooranmall with 67 points emerged victorious with Wilfred Robinson (64) and Mark Braithwaite (55) following in that order.
In the main event, in which the ‘A’ class players along with the top markers from the ‘B’ and ‘C’ competed, Simon took the top honours with Braithwaite and Davanand Persaud of Tuschen East Bank Essequibo finishing 2nd and 3rd.
Thirty-four players took part in the event and the trophies for the first and second places in each category were donated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports while gifts for the third positions were sponsored by the Guyana Draughts Association.
GDA President Mr Jairam announced that a Champion of Champions competition is scheduled for next month end.
