World rated Squash player Nicolette Fernandes, distance athlete Alika Morgan, boxer Shondell Alfred, cricketer Shamaine Campbell and golfer Christine Sukhram should dominate the voting among the panellists for the National Sports Commission Sportswoman of the Year accolade.
These five athletes produced some outstanding performances during 2009 and are the overwhelming choices to vie for the coveted crown.
Fernandes – She returned from a career threatening injury which kept her out of the sport for almost two years, but has made a remarkable comeback, whipping the opposition on the regional circuit, before going back to the international arena.
Since her return to the international scene, Fernandes has made steady progress up the rankings with every tournament that she has played and is currently rated at #70.
The highlight of last year was her victory at the Greek Open which helped reduce her ranking from #88 to the present rating.
Morgan – This young athlete has done everything asked of her after picking up an injury and having to be sidelined for almost 6 months.
Since making a comeback after a disappointing display at the Junior Carifta Games, Morgan has literally destroyed all local challengers and had some memorable performances on the regional circuit as well, chalking up a few victories in the process.
Alfred – Regarded as one of the most promising female fighters to come out of Guyana, Alfred gave this country its third world champion after defeating Corrine Van Ryck DeGroot for the WIBA title and she too should be recognised for that effort.
Campbell – This exciting young cricketer must be in the reckoning for the top spot, having made the West Indies senior team as a junior.
Campbell also performed outstandingly for the West Indies, while she scored the only hundred in the
Regional Under-19 tournament.
That was not the only performance of note for this young cricketer, who belted a century during the Inter-County competition as well.
Campbell was recognised as one of our best young cricketers for last year and that also included the males.
Sukhram – Just like the others, Sukhram is a strong contender for the top prize, having retained her title at the Guyana Open, while maintaining consistency throughout the year.
She too is no stranger to the occasion and denying her the title could prove difficult for the judges.
October 1st turn off your lights to bring about a change!
