Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony on Friday evening disclosed at the Guyana Olympic Association awards evening during feature remarks, that Guyana will host ten games during the 2010 ICC 20/20 World Cup.
Guyana had put in a successful bid and Dr Anthony was informed by the ICC last week that this country will play host to ten games.
This announcement was greeted with the applause of those present. Many would take cognizance of the fact the immense sports tourism benefits this announcement entails for Guyana.
Dr Anthony during his address stated that sport is not truly recognised for its full and real potential. He highlighted its powerful unifying assets, being able to aid social cohesion and it’s earning capabilities. These he stated have not been truly exploited.
Dr Anthony gave the analogy of the oneness prevailing during sporting events as people forget all barriers and enjoy.
He congratulated the awardees for their dedication to sports, nothing that they are positive examples for the younger generation to follow.
Divulging details of the ICC 20/20, Dr Anthony informed that Guyana along with Barbados, St Lucia and St Kitts were selected to host games, with the latter to host the female version of the competition.
The Minister informed that the ICC paid two visits to Guyana to ascertain our readiness and gave their approval.
The Providence Stadium is rated as one of, and if not, the fastest drying venues in the region and the world. The top class venue has the ability to stage day and night games, only St Lucia has that capability among regional stadiums.
Meanwhile, GOA President KA Juman Yassin informed that the association had finally secured the lease to a piece of land aback of Turkeyen to construct their headquarters.
He noted the task ahead to solicit funding to build the facility. Dr Anthony pledged his and government’s support in making the facility a reality, stressing the need for collaborative efforts for the success of sports in Guyana.
The GOA head informed that fund raising efforts will commence shortly and they will solicit the help of all to realise the project.
It was revealed during reports from Secretary General Ivor O’Brien that the GOA has been presented with a mini van from the Daimler Company as part of the IOC partnership with business entities in the development of sport. However, the vehicle is still overseas after their application for a duty free concession being rejected.
The matter has since been redirected to the Finance Minister, Ashni Singh, who promised to look into it.
The GOA was also able to finalise its anti doping rules with the international agency WADA during last year. Efforts are currently being made to ensure this is disseminated and enforced by member associations and federations.
The Minister had also mentioned his burning desire to have the national sports policy document completed. This document will also be in keeping with the world anti doping rules among others governing the operation of local sports and its relationship on the international level.
