Jonathan Foo, Trevon Griffith and Seon Hetmyer hit half-centuries as Guyana beat the Leeward Islands by 76 runs at the Pine Basin yesterday in their opening round TCL Group regional one-day under-19 cricket match.
Foo smashed a belligerent 65-ball 87 while Griffith made 81 and Hetmyer 50 as Guyana reached 302-9 when their 50 overs expired on a good batting track.
Kenroy David grabbed 3-54 for the Islanders who slumped from an explosive start to be all out for 226 in 48.2 overs with wicket keeper Jamal Hamilton leading the way with 43.
Part time off-spinner Royan Fredricks (3-25) and pacer Keon Joseph (3-55) were the most successful bowlers for Guyana who lost to Jamaica in last year’s one-day final in St Kitts.
Guyana elected to bat first in sultry conditions and the left-handed pair of Fredricks and Griffith took the attack to the new-ball bowlers on the large ground, racing to 48 before Fredricks cut Adelvin Phillip to point after slamming 3 fours and one six in his 23-ball 22.
Hetmyer, who scored 105 in the last round of the 3-day competition, again looked elegant and along with Griffith, who played an array of audacious shots, put together 101 in 21.4 overs for the second wicket before He was caught and bowled by Turnell Turner at 149-2.
His half-century lasted 80 balls and included just a solitary boundary as he and Griffith ran aggressively in sweltering heat during their partnership.
Foo, in his fifth year at the regional youth level and second as an under-19, looked dangerous from the time he walked to the crease and launched a vicious attack on the bowlers in his pugnacious innings which was decorated with seven fours and two massive sixes.
He benefited from a chance on nine at 164-2 and galloped to his first fifty in national colors at any level from just 37 balls as he and Griffith, who took 54 balls to reach his fifty, dominated the Islanders.
Both batsmen showed signs of fatigue as they plundered the bowling and Griffith was soon caught and bowled by Turner at 180-3 in the 33rd over.
Dilon Heyliger (0) was then leg before to Turner in the same over without addition to the total but Skipper Eugene La Fleur, who contributed a sensible 34-ball 30, again showed maturity and along with Foo carried the score to 276 with an entertaining 96-run stand before La Fleur drove his opposite number, Kieran Powell to cover with 4 overs left in the innings.
Guyana, who like the Leewards are yet to win a one-day title since this tournament commenced in 1998, batted positively, scored 100 runs in their last 11 overs.
Kenroy David removed Anthony Bramble (6) and Herman Latcha (2) as the Guyanese hunted quick runs while Foo, who had to take several drinks on the field to combat his exhaustion, lofted Powell to long-on in the final over.
Powell, who bowled medium pace, supported David with 2-14 as burly left-arm spinner Kadeem Phillip was the only bowler to concede less than 50 runs on the fast but rough outfield.
When the Leewards began their reply, Powell and West Indies under-19 left-hander and a member of the Stanford 20/20 32-man training squad for the US$20 Million match against England on November 1 Kejel Tyson, began with all guns blazing adding 46 in five overs with explosive batting.
Joseph, who bowled with genuine pace but struggled for control, got rid of Powell after he had walked down the track to debutant pacer Keyron Fraser and smashed him for a straight 6 and a 4 through square-leg off successive balls.
Powell, hammered 27 from 26 balls with 4 fours and a 6 before his demise; caught at square-leg flicking, was again let down by impetuous shot selection after looking well set.
The Leewards, without senior player Chesney Hughes for disciplinary reasons, lost Tyson, who made 22 from 23 balls with three fours, at 79-2 in the eight over and their innings went into decline as left-arm spinner La Fleur (10-4-21-1) and off-spinner Latcha (10-2-16-0) tied the batsmen down during the last two power-play overs.
Joseph trapped Kadeem Phillip (17), Heyliger sent Sherwin Peters (22) and LaFleur had David (1) as the Leewards slipped to 113-5.
The Islanders soon slumped to 164-8 when Hamilton, who hit a fighting 71-ball 43 with a four and two sixes, was taken at point off Fredricks.
Adelvin Phillip, who was last dismissed for 36 from 59 balls, carried the score from 164 to 194 as he found a useful ally in Turner (16) and then added another 32 for the last wicket with Tevin Osbourne (5*) as the tail wagged against a Guyana team which lacked the ‘killer instinct’ to finish off the opposition.
Fraser who had two catches dropped off his bowling, had a harsh welcome to regional cricket and conceded 50- runs from his six overs while Heyliger (2-22 from three overs) and Foo (0-22 from three overs) were also expensive as the Leewards lower order batsmen enjoyed themselves after they were well placed at one stage on 100-3 in 12 overs.
The Leewards face Trinidad and Tobago in their second round match today while Guyana battle T&T in their next match on Friday.
