Duncan, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, Reverend Erline M. Melville, pastor of the Abrams Creek Baptist Church and the Calvary and Abrams Creek congregations are the hosts for this biennial gathering.
The events for this biennial convention will commence with the GMBC 2019 delegates conference on Wednesday, September 4th at 5:30 pm at the Calvary Baptist Church at Beterverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to Pastor Duncan, “important agenda items at this delegates conference will include the adoption of the GMBC 2019-2025 mission plan; the announcement of GMBC 2019-2021 pastoral assignments and appointments to GMBC national councils and committees.”
“This year’s biennial gathering will introduce a new feature – a march and rally against gender-based violence, to be held on Thursday, September 5, 2019, launching the ‘Thursdays in Black: Stop Rape and Gender-Based Violence in Guyana,” said Rev. Brenda K. Harewood, President and Superintendent Pastor of the GMBC. The inaugural Thursdays in Black Campaign March will begin at 5:00 p.m. spanning from Calvary Baptist Church to Beterverwagting ground.
Participants in the march will include members of the Beterverwagting/Triumph ecumenical community. “All participants are asked to wear black, as we support the World Council of Churches Thursdays in Black Campaign which encourages all persons to wear black on Thursdays in solidarity with those who have been impacted by rape and other forms of gender-based violence.”
Rev. Harewood further stated: “As a church, GMBC, is deeply troubled by the increased acts of gender-based violence in Guyana, therefore we are to do all we can to address this issue. We understand that there is strength in numbers and power in unity, hence we are reaching out across denominational lines and joining forces with other church communities to fight this societal evil.
We will also partner with Non-Governmental Organizations and governmental agencies, to help enact policies and laws to help victims of rape and other gender-based violence and to provide victims with the needed resources to escape and recover from such abuse. We are resolved to work as hard and as long as it is needed to end all gender-based violence.”
A Sacred Arts Concert will be held on September 6, 2019 beginning at 7:00 pm at the Theatre Guild of Guyana. This concert is a production of the Young Excelsiors of the Calvary and Abrams Creek Baptist churches. During this event there will be greetings and remarks from special guests—church, civic and community leaders. The Presidential Address at this Open Worship Service will be delivered by Rev. Harewood.
On Saturday, September 7, 2019 all GMBC’s local churches will participate in a missions blitz. Each congregation will participate in a mission outreach project that directly benefits the communities where they serve.
Pastor Melville notes, that “Through these acts of service, GMBC members have the opportunity to reaffirm our mantra ‘we are the church at work in today’s world’.”
Some of the mission outreach projects that will take place on this day will include: the distributing school supplies to primary and secondary school students, distributing needed food hampers to families, visiting homes for the elderly, working on roads, and cleanup campaigns at community centres and grounds.
