The police force is not only about shooting people, making arrests, charging persons and making cases. While the general public is accust
omed to viewing police as serious, stern and sometimes intimidating and generally maintaining law and order, it is not always so. They have a professional and a lighter side to doing things.
The Guyana Police Force ‘B’ Division is one division that is leading the way in the force’s continuous effort to do things differently.
Recently the New Amsterdam Town Hall was abuzz with activity as the Force’s ‘B’ Division held its first public Divisional Female Pageant.
Four female officers from different stations in the division took part. They were Constable Jenessa Waithe of No 51 Police Station; Constable Dishon Paul of Albion Police Station; Special Constable Malika King Barry of the Supreme Criminal Court; and Rural Constable Joanna Wright of the ‘B’ Division complaints office at Head Quarters, New Amsterdam.
They were judge in, talent, evening gown and intelligence segments.
In the end it was Rural Constable Joanna Wright who outdid the others to be crowned Queen in front of the packed auditorium that included Commander of the Division, Assistant Commissioner Paul Langevine and all the senior officers of the Division.
The delegates represented platforms such as Peer Pressure, Domestic Violence, Community Policing Networking and Substance Abuse. They each enlightened the audience about the causes, consequences and solutions to these various societal ills.
Ms. Wright was declared the winner just before midnight. Her answer to the question, “What actions she would take if a colleague is found dealing with a prohibited substance”. Her answer was greeted with tremendous applause and gave her the nod.
Barry was adjudged first runner up; Dishon Paul second runner up and Jenessa Waithe third runner up. Miss Wright will now begin intense preparations for the Miss Guyana Police Force pageant which is slated for July in Georgetown as part of the GPF’s 180th Anniversary activities.
The final pageantry activity includes swimming and shooting. The chief judge was former Miss Guyana Universe Ms Leana Damon.
The audience was treated to a number of activities including performances by the ‘B’ Division Steel Orchestra. (Samuel Whyte)
