Mia Ritchie, an employee of the National Communications Network (NCN), and her three children are now homeless after a fire
of unknown origin completely destroyed the three bedroom home they occupied at Lot 6 Thorne’s Drive, D’Urban Backlands, Georgetown.
When this publication arrived at the scene, the blaze had already been extinguished, but not before all items and articles within the home were completely destroyed. Firefighters on the scene yesterday informed that the crew battled to their best to save the building, but explained that many articles in the home were highly flammable, thus causing the house to burn rather quickly.
A tearful and very emotional Ritchie told this newspaper that she had left her home at around 07:00 hrs yesterday and received a call at around 12:45 hrs from a neighbour who informed her that the house was ablaze. She said when she arrived shortly after,
she could not believe her eyes as she witnessed flames and smoke emanating from her home.
The woman explained that the intense blaze was just too much for anyone to attempt saving anything from the building. Her three children were at their workplaces when the incident occurred. She said that all seemed well when she left the home yesterday morning and she was bewildered as to what could have caused the fire.
Ritchie has estimated her losses in the millions. As the firemen expressed their regrets at her losses, the woman broke down and wept uncontrollably, and had to be comforted by a fellow female staffer of the NCN. She expressed being quite discouraged with having to “start life all over again”.
