The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is poised to benefit from a series of training exercises and the transfer of technology and equipment from the USA, which would boost its regulatory capacity for the oil sector.
This was recently noted by Head of the EPA, Dr. Vincent Adams.
The Environmental Engineer told this newspaper that his vision entails making the EPA a model agency in the oil and gas sector. With his global connections, particularly in the USA, Dr. Adams said he is working on getting EPA the necessary technology and equipment it needs to monitor the sector.
Dr. Adams also revealed that plans are in place to have American officials conduct a number of safety training exercises that would be needed to respond to issues that may arise in the oil sector.
The EPA Head said, “In the USA, there is constant safety training and it is a top priority for me to bring that here. When I came here, it was to essentially provide leadership. I didn’t come here to micromanage, but to develop this agency. And in order to get the EPA to where it needs to be, we need to invest heavily in training. So a lot of money will be spent on training…”
Furthermore, Dr. Adams said he has contacted several companies such as ExxonMobil to provide space and time for EPA employees to go visit their operations and stay there for a period of time.
He said, “They need a feel of what the industry entails. And this cannot be achieved by sitting in the office…”
Dr. Adams concluded that he is taking an “aggressive approach” when it comes to training, and finding opportunities for the transfer of equipment and technology. “I intend to transform this agency and it will happen,” he said.
