After being down 13-9 in the first quarter to Sonics, Pacesetters Basketball Club rallied through to win their 1st Division match against their rivals when play in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Knockout Tournament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Tuesday night.
Pacesetters had a tough time finding the bottom of the net, but eventually came out with a 69-52 win.
At the end of the second break, Pacesetters turned up the heat to outscore Sonics 21-5 during that period of play to finish the first half with a comfortable 30-18 lead.
Sonics had a better third quarter and upped the paced at the beginning of the period to help cut the lead to just three by the end of the quarter with the score 44-41.
But Sonics could only muster 11 points in the final period, while Pacesetters had their best period of scoring with 25 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Pacesetters’ Nathan Saul netted a game high 23 points, while his teammate Joslyn Crawford chipped in with 13.
In the final game of the double header, a second knockout contest, the University of Guyana Trojans topped Sonics 69-61 in an appealing game. While the Sonics only led for about two minutes at the start of the game, they were always in reach of a win but kept giving up turnovers.
UG easily capitalised by scoring on the other end and never really looked like losing after their first quarter lead at 20-13. Sonics would get as close as three points by the end of the third period, but did not have the firepower to get past the tertiary institution.
Jaffar Gibbons had 24 points in the win, while Darrol Williams and Jabari Joseph chipped in with 21 and 12 points respectively. Alex Murray had 24 points for the Sonics.
The tournament will continue tonight and will run Monday to Thursday this month at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with another two games daily.
