Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior boxing tournament…
Local senior (amateur) boxers made a definitive statement when they made a clean sweep of
the prestigious medals at the Caribbean Development tournament in Barbados a few months ago. Their junior counterparts are now preparing to emulate that feat when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) stages the 2nd edition of the Caribbean Schoolboys and Junior boxing tournament at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue on May 12th-14th.
Dubbed ‘International Junior Nuff Cuff affair’ the tournament is anticipated to produce hot fistic duels with each participating country aspiring to clinch top honours. Those countries that have affirmed their participation include Suriname, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados.
St Lucia has encamped a competent bunch of youngsters and though those administrators are still to release the names of those comprising the squad, fans could be assured of quality pugilists since St Lucia has always demonstrated the level of application, determination and skill necessary for action packed encounters.
That team will be coached by former Guyanese amateur champion, Conrade Hunte, who is well aware of the determined nature of the boxers in his home country and will be preparing his charges for a strong response. That team will also benefit from the presence of their Association President David ‘Shakes’ Christopher, who has always provided the necessary morale booster for his charges.
Officials from the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Association (TTBA) have indicated that they will field a strong eight-man team and their President, Cecil Forde, is oozing confidence. The Trinidad team includes Abdul Taylor, Tyrique Hosien, Blessing Waldropt, Denzel Massy, Meshack Thomas, Nyrell Hosein, Juan Rodriguez and Edwin Felix.
Suriname is yet to release the names of their participants but one can reasonably assume that the team would have learned from their sojourn in Guyana just last year. The team failed to dominate the Guyanese but one would reasonably assume that they would have returned to their hometown, assessed their performance and return this time with a structured approach to clinch the honours. Barbados is still to submit the names of the boxers but this country has always already proven their competence when they carted off the lion’s share of the top prizes including Best Boxer and Most Disciplined team when they last visited Guyana.
The tournament had its first edition in Guyana last year April after regional administrators called for more focus to be placed on the nursery of the sport. Local boxers were recently involved in the Pepsi U-16 tournament at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym in Albouystown which allowed the local selectors to comprise a competent squad with the talented Shaquincy Wright of the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym, formerly the Essequibo Boxing Gym, leading the team.
Fans will be required to pay $1000 for a ringside seat while those occupying the stands pay half that amount. The visiting teams will troop in by Friday morning.
