The taxi driver who is alleged to have run over the body of Wakenaam businessman Mahendra Persaud,
after he was fatally shot by bandits, was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for murder.
Rawle Vieira appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Particulars of the charge alleged that on April 19, at Georgetown, Vieira murdered Persaud during the course of a robbery.
The unrepresented accused was remanded to prison until May 16, when he will appear before City Magistrate Fabayo Azore in Court Five.
According to reports, the businessman who hailed from Good Success, Wakenaam, was shot by a gunman as he exited his canter on Alexander Street, Georgetown. Persaud fell and was subsequently run over by a car allegedly driven by the accused.
It was reported that the police after reviewing CCTV footage from the area saw motor vehicle PVV 3157 trailing Persaud’s truck, shortly before a pillion rider on a CG motorcycle shot the businessman. The accused reportedly transported Persaud to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The charge against the accused comes following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
