The Ministry of Natural Resources yesterday announced that it is finalizing arrangements to make more lands available for small-scale miners to improve their livelihoods.
This is in fulfillment of a promise made by Minister Raphael Trotman when he addressed over 300 miners at the Small Scale Miners Meeting held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre in January.
According to the Ministry, in his opening remarks, Minister Trotman had emphasized the important role of small scale miners to sustaining the mining sector and economy, and expressed the government’s commitment to creating an environment that supports their efforts.
The January 2016 meeting’s panel discussion segment, chaired by Minister Simona Broomes, Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, saw the unavailability of land and landlordism being the most prominent of miners concerns.
The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Closed Area Committee (CAC), were tasked with facilitating the release of lands and significant steps have been made towards making this a reality.
According to the Ministry, the finalization of these arrangements will pave the way for genuine small-scale miners to begin applying for lands that are not only accessible but also hold encouraging prospects for gold mining.
“The Ministry will make an announcement within the fortnight. The Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Natural Resources, remains committed to working with all stakeholders in the mining sector to ensure that miners-small, medium and large scale can operate equitably in compliance with laws and regulations while ensuring safety and promoting sustainability in the mining sector.”
Small miners have for some time been complaining of no lands available. They said most of the lands have been given out to the larger operators.
Gold mining have been playing an increasingly big role in the country’s economy lately with thousands of locals and scores of foreigners involved.
