A hat-trick of goals off the boots of Jamal Butts was enough to secure a comfortable
4-0 victory for Guysuco Training Centre (GTC) in their clash against Central Corentyne Secondary as play in the Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition continued yesterday, at the Skeldon Community Centre ground.
Butts, who is one of the best young players from the Region 6 community and one who has dominated the competition for some time now, was once again in prolific form as he booted in goals in the 40th, 51st and 55th minutes to add to the opening strike that came off the boot of Paul Williams in the 21st minute of play.
Played before a sprinkling of fans, Williams gave GTC the lead when he fired in from close range after being left unmarked.
The speedy Butts then stretched their advantage with a well placed shot after receiving a clinical pass from left midfield. He had made amends for an earlier lapse after missing a penalty kick.
Butts, who was the chief tormentor for Central Corentyne defenders, proved unstoppable
when he got the opportunity to score from another awarded spot kick which came as a result of a hand ball in the penalty area.
He then put the game beyond Central Corentyne with the goal of the afternoon, dribbling past a horde of defenders, before unleashing a screamer into the roof of the net and out of the reach of a visibly terrified goalkeeper.
Central Corentyne never threatened and were even lucky not to concede more goals as Butts tried desperately to get more of his teammates on the score-sheet, but they squandered the chances and the score line remained the same until the final whistle sounded.
It was a positive start for GTC, but they will have to get more players to support their lone star as they progress deeper into the tournament.
The competition continues today with Overwinning versus J.C. Chandisingh at the same venue.
Meanwhile in other fixtures: defending champion Christianburg / Wismar open the defence of their title against New Silver City at Wisburg ground; Ann’s Grove take on Buxton at Golden Grove; Dolphin tackle Sophia Special School at GFC; Nehemiah Comprehensive go up against Cummings Lodge at Ministry of Education ground, Mahaicony and Ash Educational play at Mahaicony Community Centre ground and Uitvlugt square off against Vreed-en-Hoop at Den Amstel.
