Less than four months before Guyana is to hold early elections to choose a new Government, a key member of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has resigned.
A senior GECOM official confirmed that Dr. Keshav ‘Bud’ Mangal, who is one of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Commissioner, tendered his resignation yesterday citing ill health.
Mangal, a prominent surgeon and current Chairman of the Guyana Oil Company, is said to be the longest serving Commissioner on GECOM.
He would have been one of three PPP/C Commissioners. He is said to be in his 80s.
It would mean that a new commissioner will have to be chosen as General and Regional Elections is set to be held on May 11.
In addition to the Chairman, the law also provides for the appointment of six members of the Commission with three appointed by the President. The remaining members are appointed by the President acting on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition after consultations.
Dr. Mangal’s resignation would come at a time when the ruling party is facing one of the most critical elections since sweeping to power in 1992.
The party is facing heavy criticisms over spending and questions relating to a number of multi-billion contracts.
Late last year, facing a no-confidence motion against his party, President Donald Ramotar prorogued Parliament.
In face of mounting criticisms both locally and internationally over the suspension, the President announced that elections will be held on May 11, almost two years before his term in office would have ended.
GECOM sets policy for voter registration, maintenance of the voters’ list and the administration of all national, regional and local government elections within the legislative framework.
