Amateur boxers have been advised to commence training as officials of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) announced that the National Open Championships are scheduled to be contested October 24 next.
GBA officials said that they have not yet determined the number of days for the championships as this will depend on the amount of pugilists competing. Nevertheless, they have assured fans that they could expect fistic fury especially since this tournament will feature the cream of the crop.
Boxers from the Republican Boxing Gym have sent an ominous warning to their detractors after dominating the Intermediate championships just one month ago with gusty performances. They will still have to be wary of their opponents from the Guyana Defense Force who will be smarting after they were out-punched at that forum and would be going all out to retain their position as the best amateur unit locally.
This does not by any means suggest an easy walk in the park for those two gyms since the other units will also vie for the coveted crown. Other gyms in contention are the Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Rosehall Jammers, Pocket Rocket, Essequibo and Ricola among others.
Boxers are advised to stay in training as their performances could decide their chances on the national squad as the officials of the GBA continue to select talent for possible participation in the 2016 Brazil Olympics.
