The quiet coastal village of Eversham made history on April 19, last when one of its sons, Joseph Nathaniel Williams celebrated his 100th birthday.
Williams was born on April 19, 1914 during the First World War to Brown Williams and Jane Brusche at Bengal Village, Corentyne.
He was married to the late Claroline Williams, nee Prince on August 22, 1946 at the St Aiden’s Scott’s Church, Skeldon, Berbice.
That union bore eight children—Dennis Williams, Cecelia Williams, Leon Williams, Linda-Grimmond, Faye Moriah, Albertine Lewis and the late Lennox and Phillip Williams.
The 100th birth anniversary was commemorated with a simple ceremony, organised by his relatives to give God thanks and praise for allowing him to reach that milestone. In attendance were the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and friends. Region Six Chairman, David Armogan; Regional Health Officer, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo; Mayor of New Amsterdam Mr Claude Henry; Calypsonian Rudolph ‘Sweet Kendingo’ Kendall; Reverend Patricia Johnson and church members of the St Aiden’s Presbyterian Church..
The afternoon Church Service was conducted by Pastor Alwin Williams (one of Joseph Williams’ grandchildren) and Reverend Godfrey Lyte.
Tributes, the sticking of the birthday cake and words of thanks from the centenarian featured prominently.
To honour him there were a number of gifts, inclusive of one from President Donald Ramotar, which was presented by the Regional Chairman Mr. David Armogan on behalf of the President, and one from the Region Six Administration.
Tributes were offered by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Additional tributes were from Regional Chairman Mr David Armogan, Mayor of New Amsterdam Mr Claude Henry, who also paid tribute to Joseph Williams on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition, David Granger and Reverend Patricia Johnson who paid tribute to him on behalf of the St. Aiden’s Presbyterian Church.
