Hinds slams century
By Zaheer Mohamed
Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) defeated Everest Cricket Club by six wickets while Transport Sports Club (TSC) and Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) B played to a draw when the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/Brain Street U-15 limited overs tournament continued yesterday with two matches.
At Everest Cricket Club, the host were inserted by GYO and were bowled out for 76 in 30 overs after heavy overnight and early morning showers delayed the start of play by two hours which caused a reduction in the overs. Kishan Bhola and Gansham Premchand (02) added 24 for the opening partnership, but when Premchand was caught off Brandon Matthews and Bhola departed for 12, the rest of the batting, with the exception of skipper Zahir Bristol, folded easily. Bristol top scored with 19 as leg spinner Navindra Persaud who looped the ball nicely grabbed 3-17 and pacer Namit Chatoorang 2-15.
In reply, Chandra Mohan and Navindra Persaud put their team on course with an opening stand of 52. Persaud played a number of handsome off drives before he was bowled by Kishan Bhola for 14. Mohan stroked five fours in his top score of 35 before he was removed by Bristol who also accounted for Mahendra Dindyal (04). Denesh Alli was run out without scoring, but GYO reached their target fairly comfortable, ending on 79-4 in 14.2 overs. Bristol finished with 2-37 and Bhola 1-6.
At GYO, TSC posted 230-6, batting first after their allocation of overs was reduced to 36 due to rain. Adrian Hinds slammed 116 and Mark Baptiste scored 40 while Mark Ramsammy chipped in with 18. Hinds shared in a third wicket stand of 149 with Baptiste after TSC were reduced to 2-2. Following Baptiste dismissal, LBW to Anthony Roopnarine, Hinds and Ramsammy put together 50 for the fifth wicket before the latter was removed by Qumar Torrington. Hinds who reached the boundary thirteen times and cleared it on three occasions was the last batsman to be dismissed LBW to Torrington. Torrington claimed 2-20 and Roopnarine 1-41.
DCC B were never in the hunt and were restricted for 73-7 off their allotted 26 overs in reply. Shane Grant scored 16 and Roopnarine 11, the pair added 28 for the opening stand. Baptiste was the pick of the bowlers with 3-20 while Joel Spooner, Colin Barlow and Toney Adjodah had one each.
The competition continues today.
