This year, Ramjohn Mohamed Khan, who turned 101 on August 16, last, enjoyed a party that was reserved for only close family members. The previous year in observance of his 100th birth anniversary, a massive thanksgiving service was held at his son Farouk Khan’s residence at Aurora Village.
The elder Khan recently returned from Canada for his birth anniversary with his many grandchildren. Farouk Khan, one of the elder Khan’s 11 children said that his father is independent and practically executes all of his personal duties unattended.
Khan also noted his father would weed the yard at times once he is in the mood.
Khan, who cemented 43 years service as an Imam, was born at Aurora, in 1912. His parents were Faqueerbuksh Mohamed Khan and Bibi Woulfath.
Khan’s father, an indentured laborer came to British Guiana in 1898 and worked as a rice farmer, primarily in the Essequibo District.
Khan attended the Scotland Aurora Church of Scotland and the Kitty Christ Church Schools for several months.
At age 12, Khan worked on plantation Sophia alongside older men to supplement his parents’ income which assisted in taking care of his siblings.
At 24, Khan married Mabel Khan, a/k “Betty” his second wife. That marriage produced twelve children. Khan has two other children from his first marriage.
The respected Imam speaks fluent Urdu, Hindi and English. Khan can read Arabic too.
Khan’s son said that on any given day his father would read the Holy Quran at least once. He added that his father has a sharp memory and at 101 avid memories of various events that would have unfolded during his life time are still reminiscent.
Khan, who believes in adequate rest and in consuming the right types of food, eats only in small portions. He is a consumer of large portions of green vegetables. However meats are consume in small portions.
“His desire is to live many more years and he prays everyday for long life”, said his son.
The centenarian is the recipient of several awards, namely from the provincial Parliament of Ontario, Canada and also for being a Canadian citizen.
Recognition was shown to Khan on his 100 birth anniversary by Ms. Roxanne James (MP) and by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Spencer.
Khan has 67 grandchildren and 120 great grandchildren.
