The body of 55-year old Balchand Beharry surfaced in a Hand en Veldt, Mahaica, ECD trench early yesterday morning, three days after he was last seen alive,.
The man who was described as an alcoholic appeared to have drowned in the trench, since there were no visible marks of violence on the body, but investigators are taking no chances and will be awaiting the results of a post mortem examination to ascertain the cause of his death.
Kaieteur News understands that Beharry lived alone and was last seen alive on Sunday.
“He was drunk as usual,” one resident remarked.
Residents claimed that while they are shocked by his death, they are not surprised by the manner.
“He used to drink and fall in all dem gutter and trench. People always gat fuh pull he out,” another resident stated.
Police said that yesterday, around 06:30 hours, they received an anonymous telephone call informing them that a body was seen floating in a trench. Upon checking, they were initially stumped on the identity of the bloated body. However as word of the discovery spread through the community, residents ventured from their homes to get a glimpse and soon enough, it was determined to be the body of Beharry.
