Guyana’s National Sevens Rugby team, fresh from a 5 day training camp at the USA Olympic Centre in Chula Vista, Los Angeles where it scrimmaged with Rugby USA, arrived in Hong Kong Monday morning last brimming with confidence of doing well in the Cathay Pacific//HSBC Sevens World Series in Hong Kong.
Manager of the team, Mike Mc Cormack said that with the exception of Christopher Singh who is recovering from a groin injury, the team is fully fit and in high spirits on the verge of their first game in the world’s premier Sevens Tournament.
Guyana is in Pool F and is scheduled to play Portugal in the opening game at 16:00hrs Hong Kong time (04:00hrs Friday, Guyana time). Guyanese may be able to tune in as the tournament will be featured on television around the world and the US NBC Network will broadcast coverage on the 2nd and final day of the tournament.
The other teams grouped with Guyana are Portugal, Russia and Japan. Guyana will have to place among the 2 top teams in the pool to qualify for the qualifying round of the tournament. Subsequently, the 3 top teams in the final round will qualify as a core team to join the 12 other core teams in the Sevens World Series played around the world.
Guyana will play their 2nd game against Russia on Saturday March 24 at 21:30hrs (or Friday, Guyana time) and its final pool game against Japan at on Saturday 08:38hrs (Guyana time).
