Football fans are in for a treat when the annual Mayor’s Cup inter Ward Football championships get underway from Friday March16 and culminates on Sunday April 8.
The Inter-Ward format is expected to feature a number of fringe and new players along with the regulars and fans are expected to be in for a treat. Fans are also expected in their numbers to cheer on their respective Wards.
No entrance fee will be required by the teams and the tournament will be played on a knock out basis. The winner carts off $500,000 while the runners-up win $250,000. The third and fourth prizes are $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Wards will be allowed to register twenty two players and the organizers said that they are employing rigid disciplinary criteria. As such, only eighteen players and two officials will be allowed free entry to the ground whenever their teams are playing. Further, wards will be allowed a maximum of twenty two players.
The opening round of fixtures read: Friday March 16: Campbellville vs Uitvlugt; Kingston vs Stewartville
Sunday March 18: Werk-en-Rust vs Bourda; Lodge vs Kuru Kururu; Kitty vs Wales
Wednesday March 21: Alberttown vs. South Sophia; Charlestown vs. Den Amstel; West Ruimveldt Estate vs. Pouderoyen
Friday March 23: Grove vs. Winner of 1; Mocha vs. Winner of 2
Sunday, March 25: Alexander Village vs. Winner of 3; North East La Penitence vs. Winner of 4
Wednesday March 28: North Sophia vs. Winner of 5; Wortmanville vs. Winner of 6
Friday March 30: Tiger Bay vs. Winner of 7; West Ruimveldt vs. Winner of 8.
Sunday April 1 and Wednesday April 4 the Quarterfinals will be played.
Friday April 6 is set for the Semifinals with the Grand Finale and third place playoff fixed for Easter Sunday April 8.
Several exciting players will be on show including a number of new faces. Among those on show are: Kevon Payne (Charlestown), Ernie Smith (South Sophia), Steffon Ramsay (Mocha), Trevor Lewis (Lodge) and Dellon Cadogan (Alberttown).
