Residents of Melanie Damishana on the East Coast of Demerara are lambasting the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated for giving lip service in the fight against electricity theft.
The residents pointed to the numerous visible illegal connections on the GPL poles throughout their community, which clearly indicates that the power company is not interested in stamping out the scourge.
Kaieteur News observed not one but many instances where disjointed wires were leading to several houses in the north Melanie Damishana area.
Apart from the loss of revenue to the power company, there is the potential danger such activity poses to property, residents and animals.
One resident, George Watson, is livid at the situation since he lost one of his pigs as a result of the illegal electric wires. He told this newspaper that he knows who the culprits are and is demanding that they compensate him for the animal he lost.
According to Watson, several complaints were made to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. Victoria office and the police on the East Coast of Demerara, but the officials only visited the area and made observations without returning to correct the situation.
“I will continue to highlight this situation until something is done about it,” Watson said.
Another resident pointed out that personnel from the GPL had visited the area and carried out works on the illegal connections. However, as soon as they leave the area the wires will be reconnected.
