A detective from the Timehri Police Station is under close arrest for staging a robbery to cover up the disappearance of several police files that were in his possession.
The missing files are said to include two murder cases and other matters that were to have been sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Kaieteur News understands that the detective claimed that he was going to a birthday celebration about two days ago when he was held at gunpoint by two masked men.
He alleged that the ‘bandits’ relieved him of his valuables and also made off with the files.
However, officials became suspicious after learning about the ‘theft’ of the files and hauled the detective in for questioning. Under intense interrogation, the rank eventually admitted to staging the robbery.
He then claimed that he was drinking when he mistakenly left the files on his motorcycle and it eventually disappeared.
The rank was still under close arrest yesterday.
Some police ranks have come under scrutiny in recent weeks after being accused on corrupt dealings, including collusion with persons in the narcotics trade.
