A fire of unknown origin yesterday morning completely destroyed a two-storey house at Friendship on the Corentyne.
Thirty-five year-old Ramroutie Kumar Singh, who occupies the house with her two daughters Romain, 8, and Vamishwarie, 5, stated that at the time of the fire she was out on an errand, and on her way home she got word of the blaze. She claims that she actually noticed the fire since she was in the neighbouring village of Adventure at the time.
By the time she got home, the building was almost totally gutted and she could not save anything. She stated that the house belongs to her parents and she has been living there since birth.
Singh estimates her losses at over $3.5M. At the time of the fire her two daughters were at home. The children it is understood were outside of the house playing. The fire is suspected to have started in a bedroom. Residents stated that the fire service took a long time to arrive and they opined that if they had come earlier they could have saved most of the building. The house was not insured.
Investigations are continuing.
