Dave Scott & Clarence Belle import new custom made machines
By Franklin Wilson
Fans attending the 36th Annual Bartica Regatta are in for a treat especially the Power-Boat races set for April 24 and 25 at Golden Beach.
Millions of dollars have been invested by a few of the competitors to ensure that for the first time, custom made boats will be setting the racing course (waters) alight with rates of speed never before seen and experienced locally.
Dave Scott, who pilots ‘Jaguar’ will have no need for the old machines and engines since he has brought in two original boats and fully loaded engines with the aim of making a clean sweep at this year’s event.
The 11-year veteran has won a total of four (4) Champion Driver Accolades, but this time has decided that it is time to step up the competition to another level which has driven him to invest millions in order to make this new dream a reality.
One of the two boats he has brought in which have already been tested on the circuit at Golden Beach is an original Tunnel Boat specifically made for racing; it is the first of its kind in Guyana.
It is fitted with a Mercury 85HP Engine which has also been designed for racing; the sleek looking machine is certified by the American Power Boat Association (APBS).
Scott, who is hoping for excellent conditions on race days in order to excel, will be contesting the 90HP to 200HP class as well as the 200HP & over category. The other boat would be using a 289HP Mercury Engine.
“I am very excited to have been able to acquire these two boats which takes up the competitive nature of the Regatta a couple of notches. Taking part in these races is always a costly affair and those of us who do so make great sacrifices because this is what we love.”
“I want to assure the fans, spectators and those who are travelling from overseas to come and be with us that they will have a time of their lives since these new boats will add more flair and excitement to this year’s Regatta. For the past few years I did not do very well but I am confident of turning the tables on my challengers this time around.”
Another Champion racer who has also expressed confidence of maintaining winning ways is Clarence Belle who pilots ‘Quicksilver’.
Like Dave Scott, Kaieteur Sport caught up with Belle and his two sons who have been foot and foot behind his success over the years.
Sean Belle, the spokesperson informed that the boat they have acquired is a Formula One 2008 Model and is full Carbon Fibre specifically designed for high speed. It will be fitted with a 200HP Yamaha Engine and will used to contest the unlimited races.
Sean also informed that they will be using three boats this year and the team is convinced that they have what it takes to deal with the challenges that will come from other competitors.
Sean’s brother, Tristan, echoed his sentiments while their dad, Clarence noted that maintaining championship ways is important for them.
“We are confident of preserving our proud record of winning this year. Competition is never easy but when you have challenges you have to come up with ways of overcoming them and I’m sure that the other competitors like Dave will also be thinking along these lines.”
The reigning 90HP and 200HP champion said that he stepping up to the unlimited category this year and is confident of doing well with his fully loaded machines.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights reported that plans are well in train and they are on the tail end of putting all systems in place for what he emphatically stated would be the best ever Regatta.
Apart from the Power Boat races, competitors for the Canoe and Jet Ski races have also been fine tuning and gearing up to take the top podium spots and attractive prizes apart from providing unmatched entertainment for the thousands expected to converge at Golden Beach on April 24 and 25.
Activities are expected to get underway on Saturday with the ‘Sashing’ of the Delegates who will be taking part in the Pageant. The event is slated for the Regatta Pavilion with the likes of Comedian Jumbie Jones and the Classique Dance Group entertaining patrons.
