The Third Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial 50-mile cycle road race, rain or shine, is set for this Sunday on the West Demerara beginning at 09:00hrs.
Last year’s overall winner Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton is expected to defend his title but will face stiff opposition from a number of his colleagues who have been in excellent form ever since the start of the season; the likes of Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud, Walter Grant-Stuart and Junior Niles to name a few.
Niles won the first of the three-race series to celebrate the life of Former President Cheddi Jagan when he crossed the line ahead of Newton in Berbice last Sunday in the 60 mile contest. Another entertaining dual is anticipated.
The race will pedal off from the Wales Police Station at 09:00hrs, proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Veteran and upright riders will turn back at the Uitvlugt Community Centre to also finish at the Harbour Bridge.
Prizes will be awarded to the first six competitors to cross the finish line while the first three juniors, veteran and upright cyclists will also be rewarded. Special prizes will go to the first two females and veterans over 60 years of age. Eight prime prizes will also be up for grabs during the course of the event which is sponsored by Fazil Ramzan on behalf of People Progressive Party Group of Goed Fortuin.
