As part of its fund-raising drive, the Western Union branded Hikers Hockey Club Junior Programme will host its first annual indoor tournament starting tomorrow and end the following day, at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
The tournament is expected to feature five categories including the Under-13 group that will feature mixed teams made up of boys and girls, while the other four categories are for Under-16 and Under-21 both boys and girls.
The competition is open to all school and club teams with four players being the maximum amount on the court at one time, while the Organisers have indicated that the goal will be smaller than usual.
St. Stanislaus College won the Guyana Hockey Board’s School tournament last year with their ‘B’ team, but is expected to receive stiff competition from newcomers School of the Nations as well as Queen’s College, North Ruimveldt Multilateral and Marian Academy.
The other categories will see hosts Hikers matching their skills against the likes of GCC, Old Fort and Western Dragons as all clubs are expected to field several teams in each division.
Hikers under-13 attack is expected to be led by Makeda Harding and Akheame McDonald with the outstanding talents of Macaela Harding, Aroydy Branford and Andrew Stewart pressing for glory in the under-16 category.
The under-21 challenge will be led by Hikers standouts Renee James, Jamarj Assanah, Rayon Branford and Travon Younge.
The GCC teams are expected to be led by the Woodroffe siblings Dominique and Samuel in the under-13 division, while their under-16 teams will have in their line-ups Aliyah Gordon and Dacia Woodroffe for the Girls and Mark Sargeant and Mortimer Stewart for the Boys.
The Xavier siblings Alysa, Gabriella and Steven and the Fiedtkou sisters, Marzana and are expected to lead the under-21 challenge for GCC.
Old Fort is expected to be led by under-21 standouts Kevin Melville and Richard Heliger.
Action begins tomorrow from 10:00 hrs with the James Service Centre sponsored under-13 category, to be followed by the Global Technology sponsored Schools tournament.
The following day, the under-16 events commences from 10:00 as well with the Woodpecker Products sponsored under-21 competitions and that will follow immediately after.
There will be also a special “SKILLAXE” Challenge, before the two under-21 finals on Sunday afternoon. Individuals will be given one minute to demonstrate any freestyle hockey skills with the winner to be chosen by the fans.
Food and Drinks will be on sale and the presentation ceremony is scheduled for 16:30 hrs on Sunday.
