National Champion Wendell Meusa turned in a classical display and eventually amassed 7 points to cart off the honours when the KEISHAR’S FIDE Qualifier concluded Sunday evening last at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown. The national champion is also rated at 1958 rating points by FIDE.
Consequently, the six players who have qualified for the FIDE rated tournament slated for later this year are; Shiv Nandalall, Taffin Khan, Ronuel Greenidge, David Khan, Loris Nathoo and Ryan Singh.
Meusa’s only blemish was in round five when he dropped that game to former junior champion, Taffin Khan. He compensated for that loss with a clear cut victory over Shiv Nandalall on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Taffin Khan defeated Ronuel Greenidge, Loris Nathoo got past Learie Webster and Frankie Farley got the better of Errol Tiwari. Other winners included David Khan, Dennis Dillon, Ryan Singh and Alex Joseph.
When play resumed on Sunday, Meusa and Nathoo were engaged in a tense battle in round seven but the former player employed wily tactics to overcome the challenge. , the National Champion prevailed.
In other round seven action, Nandalall defeated Taffin Khan while the elder Khan, David prevailed against Frankie Farley before Ronuel Greenidge defeated Raan Motilall. Errol Tiwari was victorious over Dennis Dillon while Michael Pereira, Ryan Singh and Sham Khan also registered victories.
Meusa commenced the final round clearly 1 1/2 points ahead of his nearest rival and already assured of the championship trophy. He widened that lead with a decisive victory over David Khan in the final round. Nandalall was also in winners’ row, defeating Greenidge, while the younger Khan defeated Tiwari. Nathoo, Ryan Singh, Sham Khan, Saeed Ali and Raan Motilall were also in the winning column.
The final points standing are Wendell Meusa (7 1/2), Shiv Nandall and Taffin Khan (six points apiece), Ronuel Greenidge, David Khan, Loris Nathoo and Ryan Singh 5 points apiece), Sham Khan (4 1/2), Errol Pereira, Errol Tiwari, Frankie Farley, Saeed Ali, Dennis Dillon and Raan Motilall (4 points each), Ron Motilall and Learie Webster (3 points apiece), Alex Joseph (2) while Craig Sylvester and Haatram Parbat ended in the cellar on one point apiece.
Meanwhile, junior player, Rashad Hussain took advantage of the absence of four of the stronger juniors, Raan and Ron Motilall, Saeed Ali and Sham Khan, who participated among the seniors, to capture his first major win. He played undefeated to finish on eight points while Khalid Gajraj finished second with 5 1/2 points, Mandy Ramnarine, Kana Khan, Suhai Feng and Stanley Ming Jr all scored 5 points apiece while Shane Yussuf ended on 4. Other points standing are Daniel DaSilva (3 1/2), Sheriffa Ali (3), Miranda Ramnarine and Vashti Ramnarine (2 points apiece) while Lianna Parbat finished on one point.
During the presentation of prizes Shane Yussuf was adjudged the best beginner and received a trophy for her efforts. She also received a gift voucher to compliments of Keishar’s. Rashad Hussain, Khalid Gajraj and Mandy Ramnarine also received trophies and gift vouchers. The top seven players in the seniors received trophies, while the top three received gift vouchers, redeemable at any of the Keishar’s branches.
