Place 3rd in two races among Int. field
Guyana’s 2009 Junior Sportsman of the Year Geron Williams continues to prove that he has what it takes to compete with much more experienced riders and the capacity to become one of the greatest ever produced locally following some scintillating performances at the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation / Sport Company of Trinidad Easter Grand Prix at the Arima Velodrome.
Williams is riding for Team Trek and competed in Category 2 Elite and the International Invitational races at the event which attracted riders from France, USA, Spain, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela and Barbados.
On the opening night, (Good Friday) which saw the attendance of T&T’s Prime Minister Patrick Manning, Williams placed 3rd to Dariel Perreira and Jovian Gomez in the 2500M for Category 2 Elite riders.
In the penultimate lap of the feature 30-lap clash, the little master surged off in front of the 15plus peloton, giving a solo chase to the eventual winner, Stephen Meyer of Canada. T&T’s Adam Alexander led the field home behind Williams.
On Saturday night Williams’ best placing was 4th in the 1 lap sprint for Category 2 Elite. He however returned to dominate his Category for their Elimination race (devil takes the hindmost) on the final night.
The pinnacle of Williams’ stint came in the final 30-lap race where he broke away with 6 other riders and lapped the sizeable field, causing most of the favourites to opt out of the contest with 5 laps to go. He finished 3rd to Puerto Rico’s Eduardo Colon and Darren Matthews of Barbados after a brisk bunch sprint.
Quite a few of the International competitors were impressed with young Williams and could have been seen chatting and congratulating him after the event.
He rode mostly close to the front and featured in several breaks before the final successful getaway.
He brought back memory of his compatriot, Warren ‘Forty’ McKay who also rides for Team Trek. Mc Kay was a dominant force in Trinidad for most of the 2009 season.
The current Pan Am Games Sprint Champion Njisane Phillips of T&T dominated the Match Sprint, defeating his teammate Haseem McLean in two straight rides, while Frenchman Florian Vernay clinched 3rd spot, having beaten Azikewe Kellar of T&T.
The next big event is the Beacon International Cycling Festival from April 15-24, featuring Road Races around the Queens Park Savannah, King George V Park and Tobago as well as Track races at Arima Velodrome and Skinner Park.
A number of other local riders are expected to travel to the Twin Island Republic for this event.
