A Railway Line Kitty family was tied up with duct tape and robbed at gunpoint by two men, one of whom was once their tenant.
This newspaper was told that the incident occurred sometime after 21:00 hours on Saturday at Lot 5 Railway Line Kitty.
One of the victims, Abdool Naeem Yassin, told this newspaper that around 21:00 hours on Saturday he received a telephone call from “Alex”, who once lived in his yard, saying that he wanted to return some tools he had borrowed. The man said a few minutes later he heard a rapping on his back door and when he enquired who it was, “Alex” responded by saying he was there to return the tools.
“As soon as I open the door I saw “Alex” with a knife and another man with a gun.” Yassin said the two men then ordered him back into his house. Once inside, the men ordered him, his 12-year-old son, his 14-year-old daughter and his mother into a bedroom. According to Yassin, t
he men then proceeded to tape everyone as they ransacked the bedroom.
“While they were searching the room, they keep telling us that they didn’t want to kill anybody but if we report the matter they will kidnap my children,” Yassin said.
He added that the men then found about $200,000 in cash and a canister with some $2M worth in jewellery. The man said after the men found the valuables, they fled, leaving them tied up. He said that his son managed to free himself and then freed him and the others.
The matter was immediately reported to the Kitty Police Station. The man added that the police have since been very helpful in the matter as they responded promptly and they have acted on all information provided. According to Yassin, the police have since visited the home where one of the suspect lives. He said that the man’s reputed wife was detained and questioned.
The man also told this newspaper that one of the suspects once rented a house which is located in the back of his yard. He said that about two months ago the suspect and his family moved out after they found a new place to rent. The man said when the suspect left, there was no problem between them.
