Joseph’s injury being monitored
By Sean Devers in Barbados
A WICB source in Barbados told Kaieteur Sport that the West Indies 15-man squad and 5 stand bys will be encamped in St Kitts from December 15 and that the touring team for the 2010 under-19 World Cup in New Zealand will be named shortly.
Middle order batsman Andre Creary has already been named Skipper of the side while fellow Jamaican Andre Coley has been appointed Coach. Former West Indies senior team Manager Omar Khan is the manager.
Coley says the team will play practice matches against fellow qualifiers USA and Canada as part of their preparations for the next under-19 World Cup which is scheduled to commence on January 15 when West Indies face Pakistan in their opening round Group D match.
West Indies face Bangladesh in their 2nd match on January 17 before coming up against Papua New Guinea 2 days later in their last preliminary round game before the quarter-finals. The competition concludes with the final on January 30.
Creary, who was a member of the team which played in last year’s U-19 World Cup in Malaysia which was won by India, feels the group this year is very talented and had to opportunity to get to know each other better during the rain affected senior Regional One-Day competition in Guyana in October.
The inaugural under-19 World Cup was won by host Australia in 1988 when Brian Lara captained the West Indies team before the biannual competition, which now exists, began 10 years later in South Africa when England defeated South Africa in the final of a competition in which Chris Gayle scored the most runs and Ramnaresh Sarwan made his under-19 World Cup debut for the West Indies.
India won the competition 2 years later in Sri Lanka while Australia emerged winners in New Zealand in 2002.
The West Indies reached their first final in 2004 when they lost to Pakistan in Bangladesh, while Pakistan successfully defended their title in Sri Lanka in 2006 before India’s win last year.
Guyana’s left-handed opener Trevon Griffith, the leading run scorer in the Regional 3-day under-19 series in Jamaica in July is expected to be an automatic pick but there are concerns regarding fellow Guyanese Keon Joseph, who was the quickest bowler on show in the regional U-19 series.
It is understood that Joseph is not fully fit and is being monitored. Former West Indies pacer and new Territorial Development Officer of the Guyana Cricket Board confirmed this week that the West Berbice cricketer was among the players with niggling injuries as the encampment for the Guyana First-Class training squad commenced in Georgetown on Monday.
It is also understood that Joseph’s injury was reported to the Guyana Board after the Regional One-Day competition but the talented pacer was still selected for Berbice in GCB 4-day competition since Manager of the Berbice team David Black indicated that he was never informed that the 17-year-old fast bowler was carrying an injury.
Barbadian First-Class fast bowling all-rounder Jason Holder could be named as Creary’s deputy for the trip to New Zealand.
