Cornelia Ida beat Parika Warriors by 48 runs in the final of the Azad Khan Lumber Yard under-19 Cricket Final at West Meten-Meer-Zorg ground on Sunday.
Warriors won the toss and invited CI to bat in overcast conditions and on a two-paced track.
Openers Vickash Dhaniram and Chanderpaul Persaud put on 34 before Persaud (7) was bowled by Andrew Sealey. Twelve-year-old year old Akshaya Persaud joined Dhaniram and the two added 30 before the rain stopped play at 66-1 in 12 overs.
When play resumed the overs were reduced to 30 per side and CI lost Persaud (10) at 85-2 in the 14 overs.
Captain Ameer Khan and Dhaniram added 29 for third wicket before Dhaniram was L.B.W to Elliot Daniels for 61 with 8 fours and 2 six at 114 for 3. Ameer Khan joined his namesake and skipper and the Khans put on 52 together before Khan was run out for 26 at 166-4.
Skipper Ameer Khan batted well with the lower order to see his team to 201 before he was bowled by Edwin Burnett for 34 with 3 sixes. Extras contributed a healthy 46 to give CI 214-9 from the 30 overs.
Skipper Kenworth Smith 2-42 and Edwin Burnett 2-34 were the best bowlers for the Warriors.
In Warrior’s reply, Kevon Boodie and Lennox Andrews shared a opening stand of 60 in 10.5 overs before Boodie was bowled off the inside edge for 48 with 8 fours and a six. Skipper Kenworth Smith joined Andrews and they took the score to 92 before Andrews fell to Harrinarine Bissoondyal for 23 in the 17th over. Smith (17) was L.B.W to Bissoondyal for 17 at 96-3.
Vice-Captain Goberdhan batted well to score 20 with 2 sixes and 1 four before he was L.B.W to Man-of-the-Match Khemraj Ramsundar and the East Bank Essequibo team never recovered and were all out for 166 in 27.5 overs.
Ramsundar grabbed 4-30 from 4 overs and was supported by Bissoondyal 3-24 for CI who received the winner’s trophy and $25,000.
Parika Warriors had to settle for the runner-up trophy and $15,000. Ramsundar collected $5,000 and a trophy for his performance while the Zeelught Captain Tavindra Mangra who scored the most runs in the competition (207) received $5,000 and a trophy.
Jamal Hussain also of Zeelught walked away with $5,000 and a trophy for taking the most wickets in the competition (13).
