Corentyne & West Berbice/New Amsterdam to compete
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) took another historic step on Monday last when the organisation launched the first ever cricket tournament in the county’s history for females.
The tournament to be contested between Corentyne and West Berbice/New Amsterdam would be played on a 50-over basis and a two best of three series.
Corporate support for the tournament comes from contractor Peter Lewis of Associated Construction Services and the competition has been named the “Millie Lewis Memorial” to be played in memory of the sponsor’s mother, who passed away recently.
Two of the matches would be played at the Area “H” Ground in Rose Hall Town and the other at the Blairmont Community Centre.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster who was responsible for obtaining the sponsorship hailed the massive strides Berbice Cricket has been making while noting that the Board is fulfilling its promise to play cricket at all levels, with the aim of uplifting the county’s standard.
Females he stressed have been placed on the back burner in the past, but that now is no longer the case as players the likes of Shemaine Campbell and Erva Giddings are leading the way.
Females are all playing in male competitions at all levels and this is assisting their development. Special praise was given to sponsor Peter Lewis as this was the second tournament he is sponsoring this year, having taken care of the Under-23 tournament.
Board President Keith Foster declared his pleasure at the rate of development since his Executive took over earlier this year.
Female cricket he said would continue to receive special attention and called on the players to be disciplined at all times and to be positive role models to their peers.
Sponsor Lewis stated his satisfaction with the administration of Berbice Cricket and re-assured everyone of his commitment to use sports as an avenue to keep youths off the road.
The winning team would receive $25,000 and $40,000 in prizes with the runners-up taking home $10,000 along with $20,000 in prizes.
