Ten tennis players along with national Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan is scheduled to depart the country today to participate in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) -accredited Barbados Junior International Championships which is expected to run from March 28-April 4.
According to Daly-Ramdyhan, some of the leading junior players in the Caribbean will vie for top honours along with those from North and South American as well as Europe in the competition.
She mentioned that this is the first time that Guyana will be attending the tournament and even though they will be coming up against tough competition, she is hoping that some of them at least make it to the main draw.
Players from as far as Russia are expected to participate in the championships, while the Bahamas is favoured to do well at the event.
Guyana will be fielding players in both the 14 and under and 18’s categories and qualifying sessions for the 18 and under division will be held on tomorrow and Sunday, while the main draw is slated for the following day.
The full contingent is: 14 and under category- Gavin Lewis, Daniel Lopes, Seanden David-Longe, Benedict Sukra and Krystal Sukra, while the 18 and under players are: Jeremy Miller, Jonathan Antczak, Aruna Ramrattan, Rajesh Ramrattan and Tracy Azeez.
Daly-Ramdyhan further disclosed that the tournament is a Grade 4 event.
